Alan Alda is widely remembered for his remarkable acting career, especially his iconic role as Hawkeye Pierce in MASH*. Away from the screen, however, the actor has spent much of his life building a family with his wife, Arlene Alda.

Alan and Arlene have three daughters together: Eve, Elizabeth and Beatrice. All three grew up in New York and eventually developed careers that took them in different directions.

While two of the sisters initially explored acting, their professional lives later moved into areas including education, psychology, filmmaking, social advocacy and documentary work. Their paths show that growing up in a famous Hollywood family did not mean they all wanted to remain in front of the camera.

Here’s a closer look at Alan Alda’s daughters and what they have done with their lives.

Eve Alda Coffey

Eve Alda Coffey is the oldest of Alan and Arlene’s three daughters. She was born on December 18, 1958.

Unlike some members of her family, Eve did not make acting the center of her professional life. She pursued an education in social work and earned a Master of Social Work.

Her career has been notably varied. Eve has worked as a psychologist, website designer and political organizer, demonstrating interests that extend well beyond the entertainment industry.

She has also been involved in film production, working as a producer on short films. That connection to filmmaking gives her career an interesting link to the entertainment world her father knows so well.

Eve’s professional journey has combined creative work with social and community-focused interests, making her path quite different from a traditional Hollywood career.

Elizabeth Alda O’Heaney

Elizabeth Alda O’Heaney, Alan and Arlene’s second daughter, was born on August 20, 1960.

Elizabeth did initially follow her father into acting. She appeared alongside Alan in the 1981 film The Four Seasons, giving audiences an opportunity to see the father-daughter pair share the screen.

She later appeared in the 1986 horror film Night of the Creeps. Although acting became part of her early career, Elizabeth eventually chose a very different professional direction.

Rather than continuing to pursue Hollywood roles, she moved into education. She earned a Doctor of Education and went on to work with children as a special needs educator and literacy coach.

Her transition from acting to education is one of the most interesting aspects of the Alda family’s story. Elizabeth found a way to use her skills in a field focused on learning and helping others.

Beatrice Alda

Beatrice Alda is the youngest of Alan and Arlene’s daughters. She was born on August 10, 1961.

Like her older sister Elizabeth, Beatrice had early experience as an actress. She appeared with her father in The Four Seasons and later took part in its television adaptation.

She also appeared in the 1988 movie A New Life, adding several acting credits to her early career.

But Beatrice eventually discovered another side of filmmaking. Instead of concentrating on acting in front of the camera, she moved behind it and became involved in producing and directing.

Her work has included documentary projects that explore LGBTQ+ stories and communities. She co-directed and produced documentaries including Out Late and Legs: A Big Issue in a Small Town with her spouse, Jennifer Brooke.

The move from acting to documentary filmmaking allowed Beatrice to combine her creative background with stories focused on real people and social issues.

Three Very Different Paths

Although Eve, Elizabeth and Beatrice grew up in the same family, their careers have developed in remarkably different ways.

Eve pursued social work, psychology, political organizing and creative projects. Elizabeth started as an actress before moving into education and literacy. Beatrice also began in acting but eventually found her place as a documentary filmmaker.

Their choices are particularly interesting because all three were raised by parents who were deeply connected to the arts.

Alan Alda became one of America’s best-known actors, while Arlene Alda built her own career as a musician, photographer, author and educator. The daughters therefore grew up surrounded by creativity, but each ultimately chose a professional identity of her own.

Growing Up With Alan Alda

Being the children of a major television and film star could have easily pushed the sisters toward entertainment. Instead, their careers demonstrate a broad range of interests.

Alan has often been known publicly for his work on MASH*, as well as his appearances in films, television shows and stage productions. His family life, however, has remained much more private than his professional career.

His daughters have occasionally worked in entertainment, but none has simply attempted to duplicate their father’s career.

That independence is perhaps one of the strongest themes in the family’s story.

A Family Connected by Creativity

Even though the three sisters have followed separate professional paths, creativity remains a common thread.

Eve’s work in film production, Elizabeth’s experience in acting and education, and Beatrice’s documentary career all demonstrate different ways of expressing ideas and connecting with audiences.

Beatrice’s documentary work in particular has allowed her to use filmmaking as a tool for telling stories that may not always receive mainstream attention.

Elizabeth’s work in education similarly reflects a focus on communication and helping others, while Eve’s career has brought together social work, politics, psychology and creative projects.

Alan Alda as a Father

Alan Alda’s public career has spanned decades, but his role as a father has been a much more personal part of his life.

He and Arlene raised three daughters who eventually built lives and careers that were largely their own. From Eve’s work in social and political fields to Elizabeth’s contribution to education and Beatrice’s documentary filmmaking, each daughter has developed a distinct identity.

Their stories also show that a famous family name does not necessarily determine a person’s future.

Today, Alan Alda’s three daughters are known for their own accomplishments and interests. While their father’s legacy remains a major part of the family’s history, Eve, Elizabeth and Beatrice have each created paths that reflect their individual talents, values and ambitions.
